In the waking hours of the morning, our brain needs to go through a normal, healthy transition of brainwave stages. Digital disturbances upon waking can be negatively impacting this important and necessary process.

The morning alarm goes off, you roll over to switch it off and start scrolling through messages and emails on your mobile phone...

This is a fairly typical start to the morning for most. Mornings are an important time of transition phases for our brainwaves (see image). From deep sleep to the waking hours, our brain goes through an important natural process in oscillations that mobile phone use first thing in the morning is proving to have an unhealthy impact.

We experience several distinct brainwave states, each with their different functions and benefits. During deep sleep, our brain enters Delta brainwave state, which is the slowest frequency. During Delta state, we achieve bodily renewal and rejuvenation.

As we enter the waking stages in the morning our brain may enter Theta brainwave or ‘twilight state’. Theta brainwave state can also be achieved through deep relaxation techniques, including meditation. In Theta we may experience important insights, ideas, solutions, intuition, creativity, and imagination.

Upon waking, our brain typically enters an alpha brainwave state. In this state, our brains are still relaxed, calm and in wakeful rest. The waking stage is not a time for focus or decision-making.

Going straight for your mobile phone to check personal and work-related messages, social media, news headlines and other notifications upon waking is negatively impacting this healthy restful state by potentially putting you into a stressed or even overwhelmed state. Studies suggest links between unhealthy 'connectedness' to our phones, including excessive and compulsive use, and stress, sleep disturbances, and symptoms of anxiety and depression.

For a healthier start to your days, get into the habit of not checking your mobile messages for (at least) the first 30 minutes of the day to avoid 'morning mind hijack'. Getting through your morning routine mobile-free is even better! That may mean putting your mobile in another room, or at least across the other side of your room to help stop the temptation to reach for it immediately upon waking. Instead, create a 'healthy space' by doing some gentle exercises or stretches, finding things to be grateful for, or meditation to replace the unhealthy impulse to check phone notifications.

Start building a healthy morning routine, and allow yourself to enjoy a calm, relaxing, positive, and energizing start to the day. Don’t allow the stresses of the day to eat into this important time through digital disturbances. Mornings are your time - use them well 🌞
